Three new Criminal Laws namely, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, which will replace the British era colonial laws, namely, the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively. The Central Government has appointed the 1st day of July, 2024 as the date on which the provisions of these new Criminal Laws shall come into force.
In this regard, Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) has created informative flyers around various themes for disseminating information and creating awareness of these new laws. These flyers may be accessed at
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uInOfATa2VpE1JM_zVpA0Hh0trrl7ur0?usp=sharing These creatives highlight the process of framing of these laws through stakeholder consultation, counter the various misgivings and apprehensions about the various provisions and seeks to foreground the progressive nature of the laws with regard to crimes against women and children, sexual harassment, organized crime, deshdroh etc. and use of technology in lodging of crimes through e-FIR and zero FIR and collection of evidence in electronic mode.
It is desired that all HEIs may carry out awareness campaigns by making use of the flyers and consider engaging resources of faculties of law departments, women studies department (on provisions relating to crime against women and children), IT department (on provisions relating to cyber crimes, use of technology in crime reporting and securing of electronic evidence) and police and judicial officers to organize workshops, seminars in hybrid mode for dissemination of the same amongst students, staff and community outreach with the help of NSS volunteers.
